The Evil Eye (1) During a banquet in Pompeii, Octavian (Gunnar Hansen), the Roman general who crushed Spartacus’s slave revolt sends word that he will be visiting his hometown of Capua at the end of the month. He has come home to announce that he is returning as its new governor. Spies report that there is already talk of rebellion against Rome in Capua. The entire city is ecstatic at the idea of an Emperor returning to rule it. The townspeople are so grateful that even slaves are being offered freedom if they join the revolt. Octavian meets with his wife, Livia (Irene Adler), who encourages him to go through with his plans. During their conversation, she reveals that their daughter Julia is betrothed to Pompey (Delectable Doreen), the former consul of Rome and a man who desires his own empire. Livia warns her husband not to make enemies in Rome and advises him to send Pompey back East where he belongs, but Octavian merely laughs and dismisses her concerns as paranoia. He then reveals that he has struck a deal with his former opponent, Crassus (John Hannah), and they will be entering politics together as business partners. Meanwhile, Spartacus (Liam McIntyre), now a slave in the house of Marcus Licinius Crassus, struggles with who he has become. His wife Sura (Erin Cummings) proposes that they escape and run away together to their homeland in Thrace. Spartacus refuses, hoping to change his life by making amends for all the evil he has done. Later that night, Crassus and his wife Aurelia (Viva Bianca) host a banquet, where Spartacus is tasked to serve as the entertainment. Spartacus shows off his sword fighting skills and proves himself to be a formidable warrior. After the guests leave, Crassus and Spartacus share a drink. The slave asks his master who he is and what he has done with Spartacus, but Crassus merely laughs at the remark. He takes pleasure in tormenting his slave by reminding him that he can never be free. Aurelia walks in on them and questions what kind of man would keep another man as a slave, but her husband insists that Spartacus is no longer a man but rather an animal.
